What We Do

  • Help Victims of Disasters
Disaster Response volunteers are out on the streets and in the communities, day and night, to meet the needs of New Yorkers affected by fires, blackouts, floods, building collapses and other emergencies. They provide immediate humanitarian aid – food, shelter, financial assistance, temporary housing, mental health support and emergency supplies.

  • Teach Lifesaving Skills
Helping people prepare for emergencies and save lives are the cornerstones of the Red Cross mission. The Red Cross teaches adult, child & infant CPR, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training, First Aid and water safety to individuals, groups and corporations.

  • Offer Preparedness Information
We train volunteers to present outreach courses and safety programs to individuals, community groups and schools. We educate tens of thousands of people each year, from children in their schools to employees at their workplaces and senior citizens at community centers.

  • Facilitate Blood Collection
The Red Cross is actively engaged in organizing and managing blood drives through our partners at the NY-Penn and Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) Blood Service Regions. The American Red Cross in Greater New York supports these efforts with volunteers who help recruit blood donors and blood drive sponsors. Volunteers also help donors at every step of the process – assisting them with registration and providing food and hydration to each person after their donation.
